MY STORY: Why I'm a Pre-Paid Legal Member and Independent Associate
I first became involved with PrePaid Legal Services because of the growing threat of Identity Theft. Working in the financial services field in Colorado for several years, it was becoming increasingly common to see individuals who have had their identity compromised and lives turned upside down. I too had experienced a few minor situations with my identity either being stolen, or confused with another individual with my same name and who also lived in Colorado. I had my personal information compromised at various retail establishments as well as with a health insurance provider. Believe me, this is an extremely difficult task to straighten out on your own. I enrolled in PrePaid Legal’s Identity Theft Shield plan, and at the same time purchased a legal plan for both my family and my small business.
After purchasing my Identity Theft Shield plan I was very comforted knowing that my credit is constantly being monitored, and knowing that if it is compromised, I will have assistance getting it restored. Even though I was already a satisfied customer I did not realize the value of the PrePaid Legal membership until an unforeseen legal event occurred. I then learned just how powerful the PrePaid Legal, legal services plans can also be.
As any small business owner does, we were looking for ways to save money. My wife signed a contract with a merchant services provider which was expected to save us a few hundred dollars. After receiving the equipment, we quickly learned that the processing machine would not interface with our accounting software and POS system the way the merchant services company claimed. To make a long story short, we shipped the equipment back, and to our surprise the firm returned the processing equipment back to us, with a letter saying "sorry, but this is a non-cancelable lease", (which was to be for 5 years, at a cost of about $7500). They said that if we didn't pay, they would send us to collections and sue us for the total amount. After explaining our case to them, they offered us a buyout of $4500, which is still an unfair settlement. When I refused to pay the $4500, they said they would continue with the law suit.
We quickly decided to contact our PrePaid Legal Services attorney in Denver Colorado for advice. Our lawyer explained that the contract was signed under "Fraud of Inducement" as the sales representative misrepresented their product and service. Our lawyer then instructed us on how to get the Attorney General from our state, Colorado, and also the Attorney General from the state of the other party involved. Within a few days, the merchant service leasing company received letters from my PrePaid Legal Services Attorney in Colorado, and two Attorney Generals (from Colorado and Nevada) requesting that they release us from the contract.
About one week later, we received a letter from the merchant service leasing company stating that they were relieving us from all obligations associated with the lease. This process saved us a minimum of $4500. Without my Pre-Paid Legal membership I would not have been able to afford an lawyer to assist me with this case. Normally I would have been strong armed by the much larger business and forced to pay the fee or face what would have been a financially devastating law suit for my small business. This savings has basically paid for my legal membership for the next seven years! Since then, I've used my membership for preparing my Last Will & Testament, getting legal advice for my family and business dozens of times and simply getting basic Tax, Legal, and Financial advice, saving me an enormous unknown dollar amount.
